Obituary

Lawrence Carl Unger, 80, of St. Joseph, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 22, 2020 at Spectrum Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph.

A graveside service will be held at 1pm, Wednesday, May 27, 2020 at Hudson Corners Cemetery, Allegan, MI. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Lakeland COVID-19 Response Fund https://give.spectrumhealth.org/lakeland/covid.

Larry was born October 23, 1939 in Allegan, MI to Carl and Minnie (Nicolai) Unger. After high school, Larry attended the Radio Electronic Television Schools in Grand Rapids, MI. He went to work for Heath Company before enlisting in the US Navy. Larry proudly served on the USS Lowry as a radar repairman until his honorable discharge in 1966. Afterwards, he returned to Heath Zenith until 1980 when he began working for Printek as an electrical design engineer until his recent retirement. Larry most enjoyed spending time on his boat, cruising slowly up the coastline and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed classic cars and never missed a chance to visit an antique car show in the summer.

Larry will be missed dearly by his wife, Darlene (Dodge) Unger, whom he married October 5, 1968 in Hopkins, MI; his daughter, Cassondra (Paul) Kippes; his granddaughter, Caitlin Kippes; his brother, Ken (Donna) Unger; and his nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Ruth Clawson.

I was very sorry to hear of Larry’s passing. I worked with him for several years at Printek, and can honestly say he was one of the kindest and most genuine people I’ve ever met. I hope his family finds peace during this difficult time.

I worked at both Printek and Heath, and remember Larry as a quiet humble man. He explained to me how stepper motors worked and helped me optimize the printer firmware to best take advantage of their acceleration properties. I also remember his smile when he was excited about something. My sympathies to his family.

Larry's Family - Larry's transition from his temporary home here to is permanent home in heaven is an indescribably loss to you as well as to all of us who knew him. We will always remember his kind ways, his smile and his relationship to his Lord. Her was a loving husband and father as well as faithful member of the flock where I was privileged to serve for many years as his pastor.
Many times he heard the words of Jesus from John 14: "In my Father's house are many rooms". Larry now occupies one of those rooms. He also has a room ready for you and me too!
